I'm Officially a Freelancer

Friday, May 17, 2013

Hi. How is it going? Great? Great! It's the last day of school for me. Say what? Yipee, summer's coming and I've got some quite a long time to rest and enjoy times before entering the university. The upcoming dates to be noticed are: May 25, the national exam announcement, and some dates afterwards that will be used for my graduation preparation. I just can't believe high school times flew fast, and in a blink of eyes, I'm a university student, a graphic design student. Wow.

So what's with the title? Obviously, I am proud to announce that I'm officially a freelancer! Yup, I am a freelance illustrator at a yearbook organizer company named Whale Yearbook. I had known Whale since I was a ninth grader and they are the one who organize our class yearbook and took photographs, although at that time they're named Y-book. I'm also a yearbook committee on last year's yearbook.

The story began in a world named Instagram. You know, that social media where people upload photographs, art, and so on and so on. Yup, I am so into instagram these days, and of course, I can't stand from uploading new photos and drawing into my instagram account (by the way check it out! here). One special day in March, the company asked me via instagram that whether I can do sketch for them or not. I said yes and gave my email address. After a while, they emailed me. They asked my CV and portfolio.

I was in doubt. I am a high school student, not a person with a bachelor degree or sufficient experience of working. I asked Mr. Igwan, the creative head of Whale about this thing and yes, it's okay to be a freelancer while I am still in high school. My mom said that it was an opportunity that not everyone can achieve, and she said, "go ahead. It's for your experience. This thing will never come twice." I nodded my mom sayings and start to arrange my CV and portfolio.

Weeks later, I sent the required files. They asked me for an interview the next day. I was so nervous. Just before I went in to the office they work on, my mom said: "Just be relax. Smile!" She took a picture of me. With nervous face. I felt okay later on and went in the office. The interview was fast, and was not really tensing, thank God. They seemed okay with me, although I'm having some problem to decide my own wages since it's my first time, sorry. After the interview, I will receive projects soon or later. That brings me to a conclusion that I am, indeed, a freelancer.

I took this picture after the interview. Taken in my auntie's work place. You can see gratitude on my face. Hehe.
